Curses in Sea of Thieves

Curses are usually a bad thing right? Well, Sea of Thieves curses are the exception to that rule! A curse in Sea of Thieves is one of the coolest cosmetics that you can unlock in the entire game. These curses affect the appearance of your pirate, either just in the face, or across your pirate’s entire body. Curses are some of the most sought after cosmetics in all of Sea of Thieves for their unique appearances and something that is sure to impress other scurvy dogs you encounter on the seas. So, let’s dive right in and take a look at how you can get your hands (or hooks) on these curses!

How To Unlock Curse of the Order

The Curse of the Order is a facial curse that gives your pirate the appearance of a member of the Order of Souls. This inky curse leaves dark stains running from your pirates eyes, even turning the eyes themselves pure black. The ink of this curse is said to be from the mythical Kraken itself, applied to the eyes to see beyond the mortal world. So, how do you unlock this curse? Well you’ll need to earn yourself the Fateful Memories commendation. This commendation can be seen under The Cursed Rogue tall tale. Fateful Memories requires you to complete all other commendations for The Cursed Rogue. The commendations you’ll need to complete the Fateful Memories commendation are:

  • The Rogue’s Key – Recover the Skeleton Key
  • Relics of the Cursed Rogue – Return Captain Briggsy’s artefacts
  • Free at Last – Defeat Captain Briggsy
  • The Cursed Rogue – Complete The Cursed Rogue tall tale
  • The Hunter’s Trail – Discover all of the Bounty Hunter’s Journals
  • Briggsy’s Greatest Foe – Complete The Cursed Rogue tall tale 5 times
Sea of Thieves - Curse of the Order

By the time you have that Kraken ink in your eyes, Captain Briggsy will not be a fan of you. But hey, a pirate’s gotta do what a pirate’s gotta do!

How To Unlock The Ashen Curse

The Ashen Curse is a full body curse that gives your pirate the appearance of a mighty Ashen Lord. This fiery curse will have your pirate glowing with the fire and rage inside of them. Magma will glow across your pirate’s body in various places and anyone who dares to come near you will know that you carry The Ashen Curse. How do you unlock this curse you wonder? Well, it’s not too different from the Curse of the Order, except you’ll need The Blackwyche Reborn commendation to unlock this one. The Blackwyche Reborn requires you to complete all commendations for the Heart of Fire tall tale. Let’s take a look at what commendations you’ll need:

  • The Liar’s Hideout – Discover Stitcher Jim’s Hideout
  • The path of the Eternal King – Take the path of the Eternal King

Sea of Thieves - The Ashen Curse

This curse looks fearsome and is well worth the effort to acquire it, just remember that it glows in the dark, cover up your Ashen Curse when trying to be sneaky!

How To Unlock Shores of Gold Curse

The Shores of Gold Curse is the hardest curse to unlock in Sea of Thieves currently. This curse imbues your pirate with the greed of the Gold Hoarder’s themselves. Turning bits of your pirate’s flesh into pure solid gold. This is one of the most coveted cosmetics in the entire game due to the grind required to unlock the curse, but the look of it is worth the time investment. How does a greedy pirate go about becoming made of gold you ask? Well all you have to do is unlock the Seeker of Grand Adventure commendation. Sounds easy, right? Wrong! Seeker of Grand Adventure is a commendation requiring you to complete every main tall tale commendation in the game. That’s right, every single one. Keep in mind that each main tall tale has a commendation to complete that individual tale five times, so get ready to put some time into this one! If you manage to succeed however, you’ll have yourself a curse that few on the seas possess!

Sea of Thieves - Shore of Gold Curse

Keep in mind that while the commendation says to complete all tall tale commendations, you only need to complete the commendations for the main nine tall tales. The main nine are The Shroudbreaker, The Cursed Rogue, The Legendary Storyteller, Stars of a Thief, Wild Rose, The Art of the Trickster, The Fate of the Morningstar, Revenge of the Morningstar, and Shores of Gold.

The other three tall tales (Maiden Voyage, The Seabound Soul, and Heart of Fire) are not required for the Seeker of Grand Adventure commendation as these tall tales were added to the game after the Shores of Gold curse became available.

Other Curses in Sea of Thieves

So these three curses look pretty great ,right? But are there any other curses in Sea of Thieves? The answer sadly, is no. At least not for now. However, there are some hints that there may be new curses coming to the Sea of Thieves sooner rather than later. Among the most highly rumored curses that could be coming in future updates are a Glacial Curse and a Skeleton Curse. While there is no direct evidence of these curses, there are cosmetics available in the Pirate Emporium that suggest they may be part of future content updates. Check out the Glacial Curse Pets and the Bonechiller Costume below:

Equipping Curses

So once you’ve unlocked your curses how do you go about applying them to your pirate? Luckily there’s nothing too tricky or time consuming about that! Simply pay a visit to the nearest Vanity Chest, either on your ship or an outpost, scroll over to the Curses tab, and equip the curse of your choosing! Keep in mind that when a curse is applied to your pirate that the curse will cover up makeup and scars, however they will not override them.
