Apex Legends Cross Platform Play & Support

One of the main things that is asked about Apex Legends, and most widely popular games these days, is there cross platform support? Cross platform play simply means that players can play together from different devices, so a player on PC can play with their friends on Xbox, PS4, or Wii U. This is becoming more common in 2019 as the platforms are starting to cooperate more together and realizing that cross platform play is incredibly valuable to their gamers. However, not every game has this support yet, even if they do want to offer it. There are many things to sort out both on the technical side as well as on the side of permissions and agreements with the different platforms.

Does Apex Legends Currently Have Cross Platform Play?

Apex Legends does not currently have cross platform play capabilities. That being said, Respawn and EA have already identified this as one of the main areas of improvement for Apex Legends, and are working as hard as they can to provide cross platform play as soon as possible. As Apex Legends is available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, there are many gamers who wish to play with their friends from other platforms. This goes doubly so for a game like Apex which is a strictly team based game, and does not offer a solo queue currently as other games like PUBG and Fortnite do. The developers know just how crucial cross platform play is in today’s gaming world, so we expect it to be available sooner rather than later.

When Will Apex Legends Offer Cross Platform Support?

There is no confirmed date or timeline as to when Apex Legends will begin supporting cross platform play. However, as mentioned before, this has been identified as one of the most important issues to resolve by the developers. Lead producer Drew McCoy has said “we do have plans for allowing players to play with their friends on other platforms. No time frame for that unfortunately”. So while we don’t yet know when Apex will be rolling out their cross platform support, we can at least rest assured that it is in the works and will be coming to the game.

Will Account Progress Also Be Cross Platform In Apex Legends?

Sadly, Apex Legends has no plans to offer cross platform purchases or progression when their cross platform play goes live. According to lead producer Drew McCoy “Unfortunately we won’t ever be able to do cross-progress or cross-purchases, which is a bummer, but due to the way systems were set up early on we can’t reconcile it after the fact.” This means that things such as the skins and legends bought from the shop, badges you have unlocked, banners and trackers you have unlocked, and other features will not transfer from PC to console or vice versa. That being said, Fortnite had originally said that they would never be able to support cross platform play, and they offer it now, so things can always change in the future.

How Is Apex Legends Cross Platform Support Likely To Work?

While no official details have been given as to how cross platform play will work in the future in Apex Legends, it is safe to make a couple assumptions. The main driver behind crossplay in Apex Legends will likely be your Origin account and ID. Similar to how Fortnite uses your Epic Account or Rocket League is setting up crossplay with your RocketID, Apex will likely use an Origin ID to be able to play with friends on different platforms. While it remains to be seen what platforms will be available at the initial launch of Apex Legends crossplay, we would assume it will be the full trio of PC, PS4, and Xbox One where the game has been released. When crossplay is live, you will likely need to log into your Origin account on your chosen platform, which will then allow you to see friends playing on any supported system, and allow you to part up with them in Apex to become the champion squad.

There is the chance that Apex will have to choose to support crossplay on PC and either the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 platform, as PlayStation hasn’t always played nice with Microsoft in the past. But there is a reasonable chance that cross platform support could come in a staggered release on Apex Legends, supporting one console first, and bringing the other into the fold at a later date.

It is also unknown how crossplay lobbies will be handled. However, it is likely that Apex Legends will largely follow the Fortnite model that has been established to work in the battle royale genre. This means that you will only be matched into a crossplay lobby if your party is using crossplay as well. Long story short, you shouldn’t expect to be playing vs mouse and keyboard users on console unless you are partied up with a PC player. This is the fairest way to handle crossplay and the differences in mechanical and performance capabilities from a console platform vs a PC platform.

Why Is Cross Platform Play So Important In Apex Legends?

There are three main reasons why cross platform play is incredibly important in Apex Legends. First off, people want to play with their friends, no surprise there. If you have a top of the line gaming PC but your best friend only plays on Xbox, it feels bad to not be able to play the game you both love together. Crossplay solves that issue. Additionally, it becomes extremely important to allow players to play with their friends regardless of platform in Apex Legends due to the team-based nature of the game. As there is no current solo mode, some players would rather not play at all if they can’t play with their friends. We all have horror stories of random teammates after all, even if the Apex Legends community is one of the best out there right now. Lastly, crossplay is important to Apex Legends simply because Fortnite offers it. If Respawn and EA want to continue to compete with the titan that is Epic Games and Fortnite in the future, they have to close the crossplay gap and remove that convenience advantage that Fortnite currently has over Apex Legends. Respawn and EA are no slouches however, and they know how crucial cross platform support is, which is why we expect it to be one of the first major additions made to Apex Legends.
